One week after the deadly killings in Florida, the Republican Party of Florida will host voter registration at a gun exhibition.

One week after two mass shootings left 31 people dead in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, the Republican Party of Florida plans to stage two voter registration drives at a South Florida gun expo.

The party’s regional field director wrote supporters on Thursday, requesting volunteers to assist in voter registration at the Pembroke Pines gun show on Saturday and Sunday.

The email stated, “This is a fantastic chance to engage the community and promote the ideals that make this country strong, successful, safe, and amazing!”

Local citizens have expressed their displeasure with the scheduling of the Pembroke Pines gun show, calling it disrespectful in light of last weekend’s gun carnage. The city commissioners have stated that they do not wish to host the event.

Pembroke Pines is also about a half-hour drive from Parkland, Florida, where a shooter killed 17 students and staff members at a local high school in February 2018.

Ashley Moody’s opposition to an assault weapons prohibition has been dubbed “nonsense” by a veteran NRA member.

Because “we can’t let a sick, twisted guy like that gunman disrupt the normal democratic process,” Republican Party Chairman Joe Gruters said they didn’t contemplate cancelling or postponing the voter registration campaign.

“We’re going to focus on law-abiding folks in the hopes of picking up some new registrations,” said Gruters, a Sarasota state senator. “Unfortunate situations that are terribly sad and dreadful will not detract from our efforts.”
